Building for Low-Bandwidth: Infrastructure Lessons from the Continent
The global tech industry optimises for fibre connections and single-digit millisecond latencies. In large parts of Africa, the infrastructure reality is different — and the engineering lessons that come out of it are genuinely world-class.
The real baseline
When you’re building infrastructure for users across Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, or Kigali, your assumptions shift:
- Latency: Expect 150–400ms as a baseline, not an edge case
- Connectivity: Mobile-first, often 2G/3G, with frequent drops
- Cost: Data is expensive; every byte your service sends costs your user real money
- Power: Intermittent electricity affects server uptime in ways that AWS’s SLA never accounts for
What African engineers have built in response
Edge-first architectures
Long before “edge computing” became a Silicon Valley buzzword, African engineers were distributing workloads closer to users because they had to. Local caching, regional PoPs, and aggressive CDN strategies aren’t nice-to-haves here — they’re table stakes.
Aggressive payload optimisation
When data is priced per megabyte, you learn to care about JSON verbosity. African engineering teams are often ahead of the curve on:
- Binary protocols (protobuf, MessagePack) over REST+JSON
- Image optimisation pipelines
- Service workers for offline-first experiences
Resilient queueing
If your upstream service is unreliable (and sometimes it is, because the infrastructure you’re calling runs on the same power grid you do), you build resilient queues. African fintech infrastructure has some of the most battle-tested async patterns in the world — because the synchronous happy path wasn’t reliable enough.
